Chapter Eight

Michael whipped around, pushing Drea behind him. Fear and disgust at having let his guard down got shoved to the back of his mind. Nothing mattered but the moment. He had to keep Drea safe...at all costs.

Information slammed into his brain in nanoseconds and he processed it with lightning precision. He had no weapon. The guns were not close enough to reach. No weapon to speak of besides his own strength and speed. With Drea to protect, though, he couldn’t attack.

The man seemed to be alone, but Michael’s spider-sense said that wasn’t the case. Most important, the man leveling the pistol at him held all the power at the moment. He was shorter than Michael by several inches. Stocky, but everything about him said he was more soft than muscled.

The CEO of a major supply chain, the man’s benign smile was on every blue truck, shipping container, and even planes that pushed goods internationally. Few knew the malice that lurked beneath that grin. The same one he wore now. The man may be physically Michael’s inferior, but his eyes showed a keen intelligence. Michael would not underestimate that.

“So sweet,” the man said, the words turning his smile into a sinister lifting of the lips. “Watching new love bloom. Of course, she could probably teach you a thing or two about loving.” His sigh was more for effect than anything. “She was my best student. My pet.”

Michael clenched his fists, willing the rage that filled him into a tightly closed box.

The man waved the gun. “Don’t think you can try anything. I’ve got men outside.” He glanced over Michael’s shoulder and leered. “But the pleasure of seeing...what do you call yourself these days? Drea? Yes, that’s it. I couldn’t resist the opportunity to see you again. In fact, I’m very glad my man didn’t kill you earlier, at your apartment.” He frowned. “I would not have been happy had that been the outcome. Now, come out from behind your lover’s back, pet.”

Drea shifted and Michael’s arm came back to stop her, his eyes never swaying from the man in front of him.

Randall Simcourt’s eyes closed to mere slits. “Have no doubt. I have no compunction about hurting, even killing you. It will go much harder on the girl if you resist.”

“I have to, Michael,” Drea said. The voice that he’d grown to love had reverted to the monotone, silky nuances he’d heard early in their relationship. Drea had shut down again, prepared herself for what would now happen. As she slipped around Michael, standing between him and Simcourt in nothing but bra and panties, he knew she’d given up. Resigned herself to fate.

Damn it, Drea. Fight. I need you to fight.

“That’s a good pet,” Simcourt said. “Come here.” His voice had gone hard and Michael could tell by the tensing of Drea’s shoulders that she’d heard that tone before. Head down, she walked over to him.

It took every ounce of Michael’s training to stand still and let her go. His mind told him the man wouldn’t hurt her—yet.
